This year's Fusion Festival features a superb line-up of international and local artists, celebrating the vastness of Surrey’s global community with two full days of music, dance, food and culture. The Fusion Festival will also bring together 30 international pavilions and exhibitors who will present a delicious array of world cuisine while showcasing their heritage.
The following countries will be participating as first time cultural pavilions at this year’s event:
- Fiji - Sri Lanka
- Ghana - South Africa
- Nepal - Trinidad & Tobagos
- Nigeria
Also new this year, a cultural pavilion will be representing Canada. The Canadian Pavilion is a partnership between the City of Surrey, the Arts Council of Surrey, the Francophone Association of Surrey, and the Kla-how-eye Aboriginal Centre of SACS. The pavilion will provide a variety of arts and crafts, information on the history of Canada, as well as food services provided by Chef Andrew George from the renowned Kla-how-eya Culinary Arts Program.
Popular pavilion from previous years will be on site including Aboriginal, India, Jamaica, Pakistan, Peru, Portugal, Hong Kong, Ecuador, Afghanistan, Armenia, Barbados, Indonesia, Kenya, Korea, Palestine, Philippines, and Vietnam. Plus, expect bigger and improved pavilions from Poland, Mexico, China, Taiwan and Russia.
“Fusion Fest is Surrey’s largest multicultural event that celebrates the culture and diversity that our city is so proud of,” says Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts. “There will be 30 pavilions and over 40 acts on four stages, so there will be something new for everyone to experience this year.”
The cultural pavilions are an integral part of the Fusion Festival. The pavilions provide an opportunity to showcase different cultures and the opportunity to sample food from all over the world. In addition to the fantastic food, the pavilions also will be displaying and selling a wide variety of arts, crafts, and merchandise authentic to their culture.
There will be over 100 performers on four stages at this year’s festival; including two-time Grammy award winning group Arrested Development who will headline the Concord Pacific World Music Stage on Saturday July 17th. On Sunday, July 18th, South Asian superstar Lehmber Hussainpuri will close the Bhangra Party on the main stage. Other artists are Red-Eye Empire, Krystle dos Santos, Mukutano, Daddy Roy the Messenger and Natural Flavas Band.

The City of Surrey announces Bollywood Actor Jimmy Shergill and Bhangra superstar Lehmber Hussainpuri on Sunday July 18th at Surrey’s Fusion Festival
The City of Surrey and Coast Capital Savings present Fusion Festival. This family friendly cultural festival is returning to the magnificent Holland Park on July 17th and 18th 2010. In addition to the numerous renowned mainstream acts that will be performing the City has assembled an incredible array of South Asian talent from around the globe.

On Sunday, July 18th, Bollywood actor Jimmy Shergill best known for his break-out role in Yash Chopra’s 2000 hit film, “Mohabbatein” will be on site to launch the North American release of his Punjabi film, “Mel Karade Rabba.” Jimmy Shergill stars alongside local Surrey resident Neeru Bajwa, and Punjabi singer Gippy Grewal, in this film of love and betrayal.
The Bhangra Party continues on the main stage with international Punjabi singing sensation, Lehmber Hussainpuri, who launched his professional singing career with the album, “Sohni Lagdi,” which went on to become a massive musical hit. Since then, Lehmber Hussainpuri has had 15 more successful releases. In addition to his solo work, Lehmber Hussainpuri has also been involved in a number of outstanding collaborations with international superstars like Jazzy B, Sukhshinder Shinda, Swami and Dr. Zeus selling millions of albums world-wide.

Fusion Festival 2010 also features 30 international pavilions and exhibitors who will present a delicious array of world cuisine while showcasing their heritage. This year’s India Pavilion will display authentic Indian art and décor, distinct Indian jewelry and provide festival goers with the opportunity to learn how to tie a sari or a turban. Local South Asian performers A-Slam, Raju Johal, Shez Khan, Surrey Folk Bhangra Club, Shan-E-Punjab and Shiamak’s Bollywood Jazz team will also be participating in the festivities.

The City of Surrey in collaboration with Coast Capital Savings announced today that BC’s largest multicultural celebration, Surrey Fusion Festival is returning for a third year at Holland Park on July 17th & 18th 2010. Last year’s event was a tremendous success, with over 65,000 people in attendance. “Fusion Festival is a unique event that celebrates and showcases Surrey’s cultural diversity” says Councillor Barinder Rasode Chair of Surrey’s Multicultural Advisory Committee.
This year’s Fusion Festival features a superb line-up of international and local artists, celebrating the vastness of Surrey’s global community with two full days of music, dance, food and culture. A distinct feature at this year’s celebration is the Kla-How-Eya Pow Wow. Pow Wow means Gathering and is a Plains/Eastern First Nation’s custom much like the Potlatch that is celebrated locally. The Pow Wow is the Aboriginal people’s way of meeting together, renewing friendships and making new ones. Through ceremonial dancing and singing the Aboriginal people celebrate and share their rich heritage. Everyone is welcome to attend the Pow Wow at this year’s Fusion Festival to learn more about First Nation culture.
Over 40 acts will perform on three stages including two-time Grammy award winning group Arrested Development who will headline the World Music Stage on Saturday July 17th. They have brought attention to the plight of the homeless through their hit song “Mr. Wendel”, and celebrated cultural variety in the dance smash, “People Everyday”. True trailblazers who have championed advancement and equality while spreading their positive message around the world.
On Sunday, July 18th, South-Asian superstar Lehmber Hussainpuri will close the Bhangra Party on the main stage. Lehmber is renowned as one of the greatest Punjabi singers of recent times with millions of albums sold around the world.
The Coast Capital Savings Celebration Dance Stage will feature the reunion of Grapes of Wrath original line-up, plus Lee Harvey Osmond aka Tom Wilson of Blackie & the Rodeo Kings / Junkhouse fame. These stages will also feature traditional dancers and performers from Korea, India, Africa, China, Philippines, Mexico and many more from around the globe.
Other artists performing are Red-Eye Empire, Krystle dos Santos, Mukutano, Daddy Roy the Messenger and Natural Flavas Band.

Record Attendance for the 2nd Annual Surrey Fusion Festival
The City of Surrey is pleased to announce the over whelming success of the 2nd annual Fusion Festival, the ultimate celebration of Music Food & Culture. The event was held on Saturday, July 18th and Sunday July 19th at Holland Park. This year’s attendance was over 60,000 people.
Surrey Fusion Festival transformed Holland Park into an international cultural extravaganza. With traditional food from 27 cultural pavilions and showcasing over 50 acts on 3 stages Surrey Fusion festival is BC’s largest multicultural celebration.
Each evening featured an impressive concert line up, including, Joel Plaskett, KS Makhan, Barney Bentall and wrapping up the event was Pavlo, Rick Emmett, and Oscar Lopez.
“It is wonderful that we were able to host such a well received community experience, this year’s event had more cultural associations on site and an even more diverse line up of entertainment” said Mayor Dianne Watts.
In February 2010, Holland Park will be the venue for The City of Surrey 2010 Celebration Site. A 17 day free Olympic celebration of live entertainment, live broadcast and arts performance that will takes place from February 12th -28th 2010.

FUSION FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES 2009 LINE UP
The City of Surrey in partnership with Coast Capital Savings announced today that the BC’s largest multicultural celebration, Surrey Fusion Festival is returning to the magnificent Holland Park on July 18th & 19th 2009. Last year’s event was an incredible success, with attendance of over 60,000 people and was truly a highlight of the summer.
Surrey Fusion Festival 2009 boasts a wonderful line-up of international and local artists, celebrating the diversity of Surrey’s global community with two full days of music, dance, food and culture. The festivities will kick off Saturday July 18th with a “Pan-Asian Celebration” which will feature performers and foods representing China, Korea, Vietnam and Taiwan. The afternoon will reach new heights with Vancouver Opera’s presentation of “Voices of the Pacific Rim” starring Korean opera diva Gina Oh, Mark Donnelly and special guests. The evening stage switches from “Opera” to “Opry” with the contemporary sounds of Canada’s newest sensation, Joel Plaskett and The Emergency, and an excellent alt-country presentation featuring the legendary Barney Bentall and the Grand Cariboo Opry. Other artists performing on Saturday include: Said The Whale, Maffie and the reggae king: Daddy Roy the Messenger and the Natural Flavas Band.
On Sunday, July 19th Latin music legends Pavlo and Oscar Lopez have joined forces with Rik Emmett, (from Canadian rock icons Triumph) to present a new Fusion highlight headlining the Latin-themed Sunset Fiesta. Juno Award winner Alex Cuba and Mexican super-group Tropicana will add to flavours of the Main Stage. Other notable groups performing this year include international Bhangra star, KS Makhan, Swtizerland’s uber-sensation Stimmhorn, and First Nation’s star George Leach.
This festival will bring together many distinct cultural heritages represented by ethnic and community groups hosting pavilions to present the music, food, costume and dance of their native country. The site will present a delectable palate of world cuisine with over 25 international pavilions and exhibitors showcasing their cultures.
The event will also feature three distinct stages: “Coast Capital World Music Stage” which will host internationally renowned headliners and top local artists listed above; “2010 Celebration Stage” will feature a wide range of performers from large traditional ethnic dance ensembles to South Asian pop sensations En Karma to the sweet African sounds of Ezeadi Onokwulu and Yoro Noukoussi. The “Chevron Stage” will host everything from Bhangra dancers to didgeridoos to theatrical presentations.
The 2009 version of Surrey Fusion Festival presents a celebration for everyone with highlights ranging from International Opera where popular Opera meets traditional Asian songs honoring the Chinese, Korean and Japanese communities … to the Opry featuring old country classics …. to a South Asian Bhangra dance party … to the Latin-themed Sunset Fiesta....to contemporary Canadian rock.

FUSION FESTIVAL A SUCCESS
Over 60,000 people attended the inaugural Fusion Festival in Surrey over the July 18-20th weekend. The event was an overwhelming success with 20 different cultures represented in the 60 pavilions. The diversity of food and entertainment was a highlight for everyone that attended.
The City of Surrey would like to thank everyone for helping make the Fusion Festival an event to remember. Special thanks goes out to all the sponsors, volunteers, production team, community groups, RCMP, and especially the cultural groups.
